Destination Reader and Accelerated Reader

Each term children will read a range of texts through English lessons, Destination Reader Guided Reading sessions and other wider opportunities for shared reading. Children will use carefully selected age appropriate texts to inform and inspire opportunities for writing, selecting ideas, features and vocabulary from expert writers that can be adapted and used in written compositions. Children will examine the style and purpose of different types of writing, looking at their structure, sentences and use of punctuation to create effects for the reader.

Pupils will also be directed to select and read their own books for pleasure. These are stored centrally in the school library and are labelled with Accelerated Reader levels. Pupils will undergo a short STAR test 3 times a year to inform what range of level books they should be reading.  After reading each book, there is a 5 or 10 questions quiz that will check their accuracy of understanding and track their reading progression. Pupils should still continue to keep track of their own reading using their reading record book. Pupils may also choose additional non-fiction books from the library to increase their breadth of reading material.  

Some children may still be reading 'phonetically decodable' books and will be listened to read by an adult in school on a regular basis, helping them to grow in confidence and accuracy with reading and enable them to make increased progress to move onto more challenging texts. Where a child has not achieved Level 24 by the end of Key Stage 1, they will continue to have a Daily Supported Reader intervention until they reach this level.
